Peter, according to tradition, died by crucifixion in Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero, around 64 to 68 AD. He was crucified upside down because he felt unworthy to die in the same manner as Jesus Christ. This tradition is supported by historical writers such as Jerome and Eusebius, although the Bible itself does not detail the manner of Peter's death. Jesus had also foretold Peter's kind of death in John 21:18-19, indicating that Peter would glorify God by the way he would die. Peter's crucifixion took place at Nero's circus on Vatican Hill, and he was buried nearby, under what is now St. Peter's Basilica.
