Roberto Clemente died in a plane crash on December 31, 1972. He was on a humanitarian mission to deliver aid to victims of a severe earthquake in Nicaragua. The plane, a Douglas DC-7 cargo aircraft he had chartered, crashed off the coast of Isla Verde, Puerto Rico, shortly after takeoff due to engine failure. The plane was also overloaded and lacked some flight crew. Clemente's body was never recovered, and the crash claimed the lives of all five people on board. He was 38 years old at the time of his death.
