Steve Irwin died on September 4, 2006, after being fatally injured by a stingray while filming an underwater documentary at Batt Reef, near Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia. The stingray suddenly attacked and stabbed him in the chest with its sharp barb, which pierced his heart and lungs, causing massive trauma and rapid blood loss.
