Teena Marie died from natural causes, with reports suggesting that a grand mal seizure may have led to her death. She suffered a serious blow to the head in 2004 that caused a concussion and momentary seizures thereafter. In December 2010, about a month before her death, she had a grand mal seizure, and it is believed that this seizure contributed to her passing. An autopsy found no signs of trauma and confirmed natural causes as the reason for her death. She was found dead in her sleep at her home by her daughter on December 26, 2010.
