The Menendez brothers got caught after Erik Menendez confessed the murders to his therapist, L. Jerome Oziel. Fearing for his safety because the brothers had threatened to kill him and his family if he revealed their secret, Oziel taped their confession sessions. After Oziel's former girlfriend went to the police with the information, the authorities arrested Lyle Menendez first on March 8, 1990, near his home in Los Angeles. Erik was arrested a few days later after returning from a tennis tournament in Israel and turning himself in. The arrests were also supported by evidence such as a suspicious shotgun purchase linked to the brothers and their lavish spending spree following the murders, which aroused police suspicion.
