To freeze your credit on all three major credit bureaus-Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion-follow these steps:
What is a Credit Freeze?
A credit freeze, also called a security freeze, restricts access to your credit report, preventing creditors from opening new accounts in your name without your permission. It helps protect against identity theft and fraud
How to Freeze Your Credit on All Three Bureaus
You must place a freeze separately with each bureau. The fastest and easiest way is to do it online, but you can also freeze your credit by phone or by mail.
1. Online (Recommended)
- Visit each bureau’s credit freeze page:
- Equifax: Equifax Security Freeze page
- Experian: Experian Security Freeze page
- TransUnion: TransUnion Credit Freeze page
- Create an account or log in.
- Follow the instructions to freeze your credit report.
- You will need to verify your identity with information such as your full name, Social Security number, date of birth, and address
2. By Phone
Call each bureau’s freeze number:
- Equifax: 888-298-0045
- Experian: 888-397-3742
- TransUnion: 888-909-8872 or 800-916-8800
Be prepared to provide personal information and answer identity verification questions
3. By Mail
- Download and complete the freeze request forms from each bureau’s website.
- Include copies (not originals) of documents verifying your identity and address, such as a driver’s license, Social Security card, utility bills, or tax documents.
- Mail the forms to the addresses provided by each bureau
Processing Time
- Online or phone requests: freeze must be applied within one business day.
- Mail requests: freeze must be applied within three business days
Additional Notes
- Freezing your credit is free and does not affect your credit score.
- You can lift or temporarily unfreeze your credit when applying for new credit.
- You can also freeze credit for minors or other adults if you have the proper documentation
By following these steps with each bureau, you can effectively freeze your credit reports to protect yourself from unauthorized credit activity.
