You may have piles (also called hemorrhoids) if you experience symptoms such as bright red blood after you have a bowel movement, an itchy anus, feeling like you still need to poop after going to the toilet, slimy mucus in your underwear or on toilet paper after wiping, lumps around your anus, or pain around your anus. These lumps are swollen veins in and around your anus and can be internal or external. Internal piles may prolapse or stick out during bowel movements. The symptoms often improve on their own, but you can ease discomfort by drinking lots of fluids, eating fiber, taking warm baths, and using creams or ice packs. If bleeding or pain persists or is severe, you should see a doctor for diagnosis and potential treatment.
