To know if your Apple Pencil is charging, look for a charging indicator on your iPad. When you connect your Apple Pencil:
- For Apple Pencil 2nd generation and later: Attach it magnetically to the side of your iPad. A bubble will briefly appear at the top of the screen showing the Apple Pencil name, a green battery icon, and a lightning bolt symbol indicating charging.
- For Apple Pencil 1st generation: Plug it into the Lightning connector on your iPad or use the charging adapter. You should see the charging indicator on your iPad screen similarly.
You can also check the Battery widget on your iPad's Home Screen, Lock Screen, or Today View, where a lightning bolt on the Apple Pencil battery icon shows it's charging. Alternatively, go to Settings > Apple Pencil to see a green battery icon with a charging symbol if charging is happening. It usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes to fully charge the Apple Pencil.
