- Delayed or hesitant acceleration: When your vehicle takes longer than usual to accelerate or there is a lag between pressing the accelerator and the car responding, it could indicate slipping
- Difficulty or delays in shifting gears: You might experience trouble switching gears, or the transmission may hesitate before engaging drive or reverse. Sometimes you may feel jerks or clunks during gear changes
- Unexpected or sudden gear changes: The transmission may shift gears on its own without input, which can be dangerous and is a sign of slipping
- Loss of power or sluggishness: The vehicle may feel like it’s losing power or not able to maintain speed, similar to driving on ice where the wheels slip
- Unusual noises or smells: You might hear whining, grinding, or clunking noises during gear changes, or notice a burnt smell indicating overheating or fluid problems
- Check engine or transmission warning light: If your dashboard lights up with a warning, it could be related to transmission issues including slipping
A simple way to test is to safely observe your tachometer and speedometer while accelerating: if the tachometer (RPM) rises but the speedometer barely moves, your transmission is likely slipping
