Baby carrots are made by cutting large, fully grown carrots into smaller, two- inch pieces, then peeling and shaping them into uniform, smaller carrot pieces called baby-cut carrots. This process helps reduce food waste by using carrots that might be misshapen or cosmetically imperfect and making them more convenient to eat as snacks. The carrots are harvested, washed, sorted by size, cut into sections, peeled using rotary peelers, and sometimes treated to reduce microbial contamination before packaging and shipping. There are also true baby carrots that are simply harvested before full maturity, but the commonly found baby carrots in stores are mostly these baby-cut carrots made from larger carrots.
