Turf toe occurs when the big toe is forcibly bent upwards beyond its normal range of motion, causing a sprain in the ligaments around the joint at the base of the big toe (metatarsophalangeal joint). This injury usually happens during sports or activities that involve sudden pushing off, jumping, or running, especially when the toe is stuck on the ground and forced to hyperextend. It is common in athletes playing on artificial turf but can also happen on grass or hard surfaces if the footwear does not provide adequate support. Improper footwear, weak foot muscles, and previous injuries can increase the risk of turf toe.
