how do you light a menorah

Lighting a menorah follows a simple pattern each night of Hanukkah. The key ideas are where to place the candles and in what order to light them.

Basic setup

A Hanukkah menorah (hanukkiah) has eight spots in a row plus a separate higher or lower spot for the helper candle called the shamash. Place the menorah on a stable, fire‑safe surface, often near a window so the lights are visible outside.

When to light

The candles are lit once a night for eight nights of Hanukkah, usually shortly after sunset or after full nightfall, depending on custom. The candles should have enough wax (or oil) to burn for at least about 30 minutes after nightfall.

Placing the candles

On the first night, put one candle in the holder on the far right as you face the menorah. Each following night, add one new candle to the left of the previous ones, so the newest candle is always the left‑most.

Order of lighting

First, light the shamash and hold it in your hand. After reciting the Hanukkah blessings according to your tradition, use the shamash to light the candles, starting with the newest (left‑most) candle and then moving to the right.

After the candles are lit

When finished, place the still‑burning shamash back in its separate holder on the menorah. Let the candles burn on their own for at least about 30 minutes, and many people stay nearby to enjoy the light, sing traditional songs, or share Hanukkah treats.
