A simple, warm “Happy Hanukkah!” is always perfectly appropriate. If you want to be a bit more traditional, you can also use short Hebrew phrases.
Basic greetings
- You can always say: “Happy Hanukkah!”
- A slightly more formal version is: “Wishing you a happy Hanukkah and a season of light and joy.”
Hebrew phrases
- “Hanukkah Sameach” (pronounced: HAH-nuh-kah sah-MAY-akh) means “Happy Hanukkah.”
- “Chag Sameach” (pronounced: KHAG sah-MAY-akh) means “Happy holiday” and is also commonly used.
When and how to say it
- You can say it any time during the 8 days of Hanukkah, whether in person, by text, or in a card.
- If you are not Jewish, it is still welcome and respectful; just keep it sincere and simple.
