The guru saves his disciple's life by using cleverness and creating a deception that confuses the king. When it was time for the disciple to be executed, the guru whispered to the king that the stake on which the execution was to take place was special: the first person to be executed on it would be reborn as the king of that kingdom in the next life, and the second person executed would become the minister. The king, not wanting to lose his kingdom and desirous of this reincarnation situation, postponed the execution of both the guru and disciple. Eventually, the king and his minister ended up executing themselves, allowing the guru and disciple to be freed. This trick saved the disciple's life by fooling the king and exploiting his greed and superstition.
