Toto takes a bath in a tub of warm water. He first tests the temperature with his hand, then gradually steps into the bath, putting his feet in one by one until the water reaches up to his neck. Once comfortable, he takes soap in his hands or feet and rubs himself all over. When the water becomes cold, he quickly runs to the kitchen fire to dry himself
. Toto has learned to bathe by watching the narrator (or the person taking care of him) and imitating their actions, as monkeys are good at aping others
. Toto almost boiled himself alive one day when a large kettle was left on the fire to boil water for tea. Curious, Toto removed the lid and found the water just warm enough for a bath. He got into the kettle with his head sticking out, but the water began to boil. Not understanding the danger, he kept dipping his head up and down until his grandmother arrived and pulled him out in time
