Sea turtles move very slowly on land, typically at a speed of about 0.2 miles per hour (0.3 km/h). This slow pace is largely due to their body structure and the effort required to support their weight on land. For example, the leatherback sea turtle, which is the fastest swimmer among sea turtles in water, still moves at only about 0.2 mph on land. Other sea turtle species show similar slow speeds on land around 0.2 mph. In contrast, their swimming speeds can be much faster, with leatherbacks reaching up to 22 mph in water.
