A hippopotamus can swim at speeds of about 5 miles per hour (8 kilometers per hour). Young hippos and some studies suggest they can swim even faster, up to around 8 miles per hour (about 12 kilometers per hour). However, hippos do not swim in the conventional sense; they mostly move by walking or bouncing along the river or lake bottom, using their powerful legs to push off and glide forward in deeper waters since their bodies are dense and they cannot float easily.
