Sandy Koufax's fastball speed is estimated to have been in the range of 95 to 100 mph during his prime years. This was particularly impressive for the era in which he played (1955 to 1966), given that pitch speed measurement technology was not as advanced then. Some sources note a speed around 97 mph, and even though some reports mention speeds closer to 89.6 mph, the widely accepted top range is around the mid to high 90s mph. Koufax's fastball was not only about speed but also about its sharp-breaking action and a unique rising motion due to heavy backspin, making it very difficult for batters to hit. This combination helped him dominate opponents and win multiple awards during his career, including three Cy Young Awards.
