The Earth has several different movements, each with its own speed
. Speeds:
- Rotation on its axis Earth rotates at roughly 1,000 miles per hour (1,600 km/hr) at the equator
. The speed decreases as you move towards the poles
- Orbit around the Sun The Earth orbits the sun at approximately 67,000 miles per hour (107,000 km/hr)
- Solar system around the Milky Way The Sun, Earth, and the solar system orbit the center of the Milky Way at about 140 miles a second
- Movement through space The Milky Way moves through space within a cluster of galaxies, and that cluster moves toward the Virgo Cluster at 375 miles per second
