The peregrine falcon is the fastest bird and animal on the planet, capable of reaching speeds of over 320 km/h (200 mph) during its high-speed dive, known as the stoop. The highest recorded speed measured was about 389 km/h (242 mph) during a hunting stoop dive, although some studies suggest theoretical limits could be even higher, nearing 400 km/h (250 mph) for low-altitude flight and 625 km/h (388 mph) for high-altitude dives. During normal flight, peregrine falcons typically fly between 40 to 60 mph (64 to 97 km/h), and cruise at speeds between 24 to 33 mph. Their exceptional speed during dives helps them catch prey mid-air with great precision and force.
