Hurricane Idalia was moving northward at speeds roughly between 14 mph (22 km/h) and 18 mph (30 km/h) during its approach to and landfall on the Florida Gulf Coast in late August 2023. Around the time of landfall, the storm's forward speed was reported to be about 18 mph (30 km/h) by the National Hurricane Center. Earlier, it was moving north near 14 to 15 mph. This relatively fast forward speed allowed Idalia to maintain much of its intensity as a hurricane while advancing inland through the southeastern U.S. region.
