The International Space Station (ISS) moves at an average speed of about 28,000 kilometers per hour (approximately 17,500 miles per hour), which is roughly 7.9 kilometers per second (around 5 miles per second). At this speed, the ISS completes an orbit around the Earth roughly every 90 minutes, making about 16 orbits per day. This high speed is necessary to maintain its low Earth orbit at around 400 kilometers (250 miles) altitude, counteracting Earth's gravity by centrifugal force to stay in stable orbit without falling back to Earth.
