An AFL quarter is officially 20 minutes of playing time. However, due to stoppages such as injuries, goals, and other interruptions, each quarter usually lasts around 25 to 30 minutes in real time. The clock is stopped during these stoppages, which adds to the actual duration of each quarter beyond the base 20 minutes.
