how long can fleas live without a host

Adult fleas can live without a host for about one to two weeks, typically up to two weeks without feeding on blood. However, if the conditions are favorable (warm, humid, and with plenty of hiding spots), fleas in other stages of their life cycle can survive much longer. For example, flea pupae can survive in their cocoon for several months, sometimes up to 100 days or even longer in hibernation. Flea larvae can live for up to 20 days or even longer by feeding on organic debris like flea dirt (feces of adult fleas) rather than blood. Without a host to feed on, adult fleas will die relatively quickly, usually within a few days to two weeks, but the full flea life cycle stages can extend the presence of fleas in an environment for months.
