Once infant formula is made up (prepared):
- At room temperature, it should be used within 2 hours of preparation. If feeding has started, the formula should be used within 1 hour
- If not used within 2 hours at room temperature, the prepared formula must be refrigerated immediately and used within 24 hours
- Once a baby has drunk from the bottle, any leftover formula should be discarded within 1 hour and not saved for later due to bacterial contamination risk
- Prepared formula should never be frozen, as freezing can alter its texture and quality without extending its safe use time
- Unopened powdered formula lasts until the expiration date on the container and should be stored in a cool, dry place, not refrigerated
- Opened powdered formula should be used within about 1 month, following label instructions
- Ready-to-feed or liquid concentrate formula, once opened, can be refrigerated and used within 48 hours
In summary, for safety and quality, use prepared formula within 2 hours at room temperature or within 24 hours if refrigerated immediately after preparation. Discard any formula left after feeding within 1 hour
