The cleanup of debris from the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center site took approximately eight months to complete, with rescue and recovery workers working around the clock. The process culminated with the removal of the final steel column on May 30, 2002. Although the main cleanup was completed in about eight months, some smaller debris and artifacts continued to be found and removed in the following years. The debris was transported mainly to the Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island, where it was further sorted and examined for evidence and human remains.
