An echocardiogram typically takes between 15 to 60 minutes depending on the type of the test. The most common type, the transthoracic echocardiogram, usually lasts about 40 to 60 minutes. A transesophageal echocardiogram may take longer, around 30 to 90 minutes including preparation and recovery. A stress echocardiogram also takes about an hour. Generally, these tests are non-invasive and do not require a long recovery period afterward.
