how long does it take for abreva to work

Abreva does not work instantly, but it can shorten how long a cold sore lasts if used correctly.

Typical healing time

When applied within about 12 hours of the first tingling, redness, or itching, Abreva can shorten healing to around 4 days on average, which is only about 18 hours faster than no active medication in some studies. The brand reports a median healing time of about 4.1 days, with about one quarter of people healing in as little as 2.5 days when it is started at the very first sign.

When it starts to work

Abreva starts acting on the virus as soon as it is applied by blocking the virus from entering skin cells, but symptom relief is gradual rather than immediate. Cold sores can still take up to 8–10 days to fully clear, especially if treatment is started late or if the outbreak is more severe.

How to use for best results

For best results, you should:

  • Apply Abreva at the very first sign of a cold sore (tingling, burning, or a small bump), before blisters appear.
  • Use it about five times per day and continue until the cold sore is healed, for up to 10 days maximum as directed on the package.

If a cold sore is not improving after about 10 days, is very painful, or you get frequent outbreaks, contacting a healthcare professional is recommended.
