The AP U.S. Government and Politics exam lasts a total of 3 hours. It is divided into two main sections:

- 1 hour 20 minutes (80 minutes)
- Accounts for 50% of the total score
- Section II: Free Response
- 4 questions
- 1 hour 40 minutes (100 minutes)
- Accounts for the other 50% of the total score
The free-response section includes a concept application question, a quantitative analysis question, a Supreme Court comparison question, and an argument essay
