The time to cook a steak depends on the thickness of the steak and the desired doneness. For grilling a 1 to 2 inch thick steak:
- Rare (120°–130°F): 3-5 minutes per side
- Medium Rare (130°–140°F): 4-6 minutes per side
- Medium (140°–150°F): 5-8 minutes per side
- Well Done (160°–170°F): 7-12 minutes per side
For example, a 1-inch thick steak would cook about 5 minutes on the first side and 3-5 minutes on the second side for medium rare. Thicker steaks take longer. Letting the steak rest for 5-10 minutes after cooking is also important to redistribute juices.
