Nelson Mandela was in prison for over 27 years. He was first sentenced in 1962 to five years in prison and then later sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964. Mandela was finally released from prison in 1990. During his imprisonment, he spent 18 years on Robben Island, and the remaining time in other prisons including Pollsmoor and Victor Verster Prison.
