The U.S. government shutdown in 2019 lasted for 35 days, from midnight EST on December 22, 2018, until January 25, 2019. It was the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. The shutdown occurred due to an impasse over funding for a border wall requested by President Donald Trump. It affected about one- fourth of government activities and caused a large number of federal employees to be furloughed or work without pay during that time.
