A lunar eclipse can last for several hours in total, including all phases from the beginning to the end of the eclipse. For example, the total lunar eclipse on September 7–8, 2025, will last about 5 hours and 27 minutes from start to finish. The total phase of the eclipse itself (when the moon is fully covered) will last about 1 hour and 22 minutes during that event. In general, lunar eclipses can last anywhere from about 2 to 5 hours, with the totality phase lasting up to nearly 2 hours in some cases. This duration is much longer than a solar eclipse because the Earth's shadow is larger than the moon's shadow, allowing for an extended darkening period of the moon.
