There are currently two primary Air Force One planes in service, both of which are highly modified Boeing 747-200B jumbo jets designated VC-25A with tail numbers 28000 and 29000. These two aircraft serve as the official presidential planes and have been in service since the early 1990s. Additionally, there are two new Boeing 747-8 based planes designated VC-25B that have been ordered to replace the aging VC-25As, with delivery expected around 2027 and 2028. So, in summary:

  • 2 active Air Force One planes (VC-25A, Boeing 747-200B)
  • 2 replacement planes (VC-25B, Boeing 747-8) ordered but not yet delivered

There are also other USAF aircraft used for presidential or high-level official transport, but the official "Air Force One" planes are primarily these two VC-25As currently in use, soon to be replaced by the two VC-25Bs.
