There were a total of 17 Apollo missions, numbered Apollo 1 through Apollo 17. Some early missions (Apollo 1 was a tragic accident) and a few uncrewed missions focused on testing spacecraft and equipment. Starting with Apollo 7, the missions became crewed, and the program included six successful crewed lunar landings (Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17). Apollo 13 was a crewed mission that did not land on the Moon due to an in-flight accident but returned safely to Earth. Altogether, 12 astronauts walked on the Moon during these missions.
