This number can vary based on several factors such as the number of pitches, foul balls, home runs, and balls getting scuffed or dirty during play, which leads to frequent replacement. For example, a ball is replaced after every half- inning and whenever it hits the ground or gets damaged. Some pitchers also discard balls more frequently depending on their preference. This high turnover results in nearly 300,000 baseballs being used just during the regular season, with the total for the year (including playoffs and practice) reaching around 900,000 baseballs, costing MLB roughly $10 million annually.
