A rainbow traditionally has 7 colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. This sequence is often remembered by the mnemonic "ROYGBIV." The idea of seven colors in a rainbow was introduced by Isaac Newton; however, in reality, a rainbow contains a continuous spectrum of many colors blending into each other, and the number seven is somewhat arbitrary and based on historical and perceptual reasons.
