There are around 40 COVID-19 vaccines that have received full or emergency use authorization worldwide
. Among these:
- 10 vaccines have been approved by at least one stringent regulatory authority recognized by the WHO, including Pfizer–BioNTech, Oxford–AstraZeneca, Sinopharm BIBP, Moderna, Janssen (Johnson & Johnson), CoronaVac, Covaxin, Novavax, Convidecia, and Sanofi–GSK
- Several others are under WHO assessment, such as Sputnik V, Sinopharm WIBP, Abdala, Zifivax, Corbevax, COVIran Barekat, and SCB-2019
- Some vaccines have authorization in only one country, while others are authorized in multiple countries, with 12 vaccines authorized in more than ten countries
In the United States, three vaccines are currently available for use, including updated versions of mRNA vaccines like Pfizer–BioNTech and Moderna, and the protein-based Novavax vaccine, which received full FDA approval in May 2025 for certain groups
. Thus, the total number of COVID-19 vaccines globally is about 40, with varying levels of authorization and usage depending on the country
