On September 11, 2001, a total of 343 firefighters from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) died in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Additionally, one New York Fire Patrolman, Keith Roma, who also was a firefighter, was killed, though he is not included in the official 343 firefighter count. This event marks the largest loss of life of any emergency response agency in history. Beyond the immediate tragedy, hundreds of FDNY firefighters have since died from illnesses related to exposure at the World Trade Center site, bringing long-term casualties due to 9/11-related health conditions to over 360 by recent counts.
