Neptune has 16 known moons. The largest moon is Triton, discovered shortly after Neptune itself in 1846. The other moons include Nereid, Proteus, Larissa, Despina, Galatea, Thalassa, Naiad, and several smaller irregular satellites. Most of Neptune's moons are named after water deities and creatures from Greek mythology
