Most dogs have between 6 to 10 nipples, usually arranged in two symmetrical rows along the abdomen. The number can vary from dog to dog, with some having as few as two or more than ten. Male and female dogs have the same number of nipples because they develop before the dog's sex is determined in the womb. The number of nipples is related to the typical litter size dogs have, to allow for nursing all the puppies. The nipples usually sit symmetrically, but some dogs can have an odd number or nipples in unusual places, which is generally not a concern.
