As of 2025, the United States has an estimated total inventory of about 5,177 nuclear warheads. This total includes approximately:
- 1,770 deployed nuclear warheads,
- 1,930 warheads in reserve,
- 1,477 retired warheads awaiting dismantlement.
Of the deployed warheads, around 1,389 are strategic warheads on intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), and heavy bombers. The U.S. maintains a nuclear triad of land-based missiles, sea-based submarines, and air-delivered weapons to ensure strategic deterrence. The overall U.S. arsenal has been reduced significantly from its Cold War peak of over 31,000 warheads in 1967 but remains one of the largest in the world. The current stockpile is actively being modernized while maintaining a combination of deployed, reserve, and retired warheads totaling over five thousand nuclear weapons.
