Mexico officially recognizes 69 official languages. This includes Spanish, which is the most spoken language, and 68 indigenous languages that have equal status with Spanish as per the General Law of Linguistic Rights of the Indigenous Peoples enacted in 2003.
The top 3 languages spoken in Mexico, other than Spanish, are:
- Nahuatl - spoken by about 1.7 million people, it was the language of the Aztecs.
- Yucatec Maya - spoken by approximately 850,000 people, especially in the Yucatán Peninsula.
- Mixteco - spoken by around 500,000 people, mostly in southwestern Mexico.
These indigenous languages represent the rich cultural heritage of the country and have legal recognition alongside Spanish.
