Approximately 200 people are estimated to have fallen or jumped from the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. Most of these individuals were from the North Tower, with reports suggesting about 104 to 107 from the North Tower and only a few from the South Tower. The people who fell or jumped generally did so to escape the intense heat, smoke, and fire caused by the attacks, although the New York City medical examiner's office does not classify them as "jumpers" because they were forced out or blown out rather than jumping voluntarily. This tragic phenomenon accounted for roughly one out of every six deaths in the North Tower.
