Thirty-nine delegates signed the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787. Of the 70 delegates chosen, 55 attended the Constitutional Convention, and of the 41 present at the time of signing, 38 signed the document. One delegate, John Dickinson, who could not attend, authorized another delegate to sign for him, bringing the total number of signers to 39. Three delegates present refused to sign due to philosophical differences, and Rhode Island did not send any delegates to the convention.
