On September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked and deliberately crashed in coordinated terrorist attacks. Two planes hit the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City: American Airlines Flight 11 hit the North Tower, and United Airlines Flight 175 hit the South Tower. A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to overcome the hijackers. Thus, the total number of planes that hit a target on 9/11 was three, with the fourth crashing in a field before reaching its intended target.
