Our solar system has eight officially recognized planets. These are, in order from the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune
. Pluto, once considered the ninth planet, was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) because it does not meet all the criteria of a planet, specifically it has not cleared its orbital neighborhood
. In addition to the eight planets, there are five officially recognized dwarf planets: Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris
. Thus, the total number of planets in our solar system is eight.
