There were about 130 residential schools in Canada at the peak of the program, supported by the federal government. By the 1930s, there were around 70 residential schools operating simultaneously. These schools were mostly run by churches, with about 60% operated by the Catholic Church. The last residential school closed in 1996. In total, more than 150,000 Indigenous children attended these schools over the system's history.
