Heathrow Airport has two runways. The Northern Runway (designated 09L/27R) is 3,902 meters long and 50 meters wide, making it the longest active runway in the United Kingdom. The Southern Runway (designated 09R/27L) is 3,658 meters long and also 50 meters wide. Despite being the UK's busiest airport with over 80 million travelers a year and having four passenger terminals, it operates with just these two parallel runways currently. Plans for adding a third runway have been under discussion for nearly two decades but have not yet been realized.
