Approximately 388,000 enslaved Africans were brought directly to what is now the United States during the entire transatlantic slave trade period. Including those who arrived via the Caribbean first, the total number is estimated to be about 450,000. This figure is a small fraction of the roughly 12.5 million Africans shipped to the New World overall, with most enslaved Africans sent to the Caribbean and South America, especially Brazil. Despite this relatively small number brought to the U.S., the African-American population grew significantly over time through natural increase.
